When I was down in South Africa in 2010, we rented a Land Rover and headed from Durban to Lesotho, at some point we lost the back plate (we hadn't realised until we were probably way past it) but we had the documents and stuck a makeshift plate to the car. We thought we would have big trouble with the rental company but all they needed was a fee of 900 rand - no legal stuff! BUT we were stopped multiple times along the N3 because of the makeshift plate! :(
