I don't mean to change the topic of this thread, but how would this lens be regarding sharpness? I just got my DSLR less than a month ago, and am pondering purchasing this lens in about 2 months depending on how much I use my camera over this span of time.

Here's the one in consideration (and yes, I know to look for a better price): http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/camera-lenses/af-s-dx-nikkor-18-140mm-f%252f3.5-5.6g-ed-vr.html

Not very good. Get a prime lens (50 1.8, 35 1.8) or something like a 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 if you want sharp.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. From the jist of the thread I could tell that would be the most likely response. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds for a 24-70mm 2.8 or the like (unless you have a suggestion that is way cheaper than the price Nikon gives, which is like $1,800).

But, how would this match up? I know this has a higher minimum aperture, but this is way much more within my price range: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/camera-lenses/af-s-nikkor-24-85mm-f%252f3.5-4.5g-ed-vr.html

I'm still having problems with my camera because now my lens won't focus properly and half the time everything else BUT the car I'm taking pictures of will be in focus. I really don't know what to do now. I've been shooting in A-DEP, Flash Off, and TV but nothing seems to work.

I'm trying to achieve pictures like this. This was taken with the same camera I have now using an 18-135mm lens:

This was taken with a 60D with an 18-200mm lens:

Here is a shot of mine from 2014 when I first got my 18-200mm. Notice how every detail is in perfect focus. I could never pull this off now:

Every shot from the two days that I was at the Greenwich Concours came out perfectly. I just don't understand why I can't do this now.

Don't use A-DEP or TV mode on Canon, from my own experiences they are not the best things in the world. Try using M if you haven't already; can you be more in detail of how they aren't in focus? A picture would be even better.

I love my EF50 but it's acting a little funny. I'll be out spotting (a lot lately) and I focus on a car in very bright sunlight. It takes a second to focus, and then it unfocuses. Press the button again. Same thing. Move slightly and press the button again. Same thing. Definitely frustrating when you're trying to be quick about it.

Also I love the bokeh it offers at really wide apertures but I notice that the cars in my pictures could be a lot sharper. Certain parts of the car are sharp while other parts are too soft. What aperture would you recommend?

I always go for the lowest F Stop possible, as it really makes the car pop out with such a blurred background. However, due to the narrow aperture opening, it does make it tricky for the lens to focus properly as you have experienced (from what I've read above). My suggestion is use Live View focus (for Canon), but if you prefer not to, just try to make as many focus points be on your subject as possible. There really is no way to prevent the sometimes lack of focus from low aperture lenses. I would not recommend going higher than 2.8. Also send me a message on IG regarding your lens, I may be able to help since I had one before too.

Could be a sensor issue; look in your camera's manual about sensor cleaning and all that good stuff, or check out Canon's website. If cleaning it doesn't work, chances are it is a sensor issue rather than one with the lens as my old T6S started developing similar issues and I had to get the entire sensor and mainboard/motherboard replaced since it was completely buggered. I would definitely take it in for some professional to check it out as I am no where near such a level, this is only my assumption from personal experiences.
