I'm looking for a new lens to get for next spotting season with a good Dof, something that will make it look like these. I use a Nikon D5100. Any suggestions???

Those were all taken with low-aperature telephoto lenses. They'll be pretty expensive though.

I have a D5100 and recently got a 1.8 50mm fixed lens. I really like it.

And it has good DOF for shooting cars?

You will get good bokeh shooting with a 50mm 1.8, but fixed-range lenses are difficult to shoot with because you can't zoom, you have to do all the composition yourself. I have Nikon's 24-70 f/2.8 which has great bokeh and sharpness but it's, uhh, expensive as hell haha. The 50 has great bokeh and sharpness and is very cheap.

If it's just for cars, I wouldn't get either one. I don't know the specs of them but judging by the ranges, you won't get very much real world use from either one.

Get a 70-200mm for longer distance they are amazin lenses i have the canon one and it's fantastic.

For closer parked cars etc get a 50mm with the widest aperture in your price range either the 1.4 or 1.8

I don't know much about nikon lenses but I know heaps about canon so if anyone needs help with canon lenses message me.

People rarely use it but it's the technical word for the characteristics of the out-of-focus areas of the photo. So if you're focused on the car in the frame, the bokeh will be the blurriness in the background (assuming you're shooting at a high aperture). Bokeh gives the impression of depth of field.

@W16 I have a sigma 50mm prime 1.4 and it's an excellent lens, but the inability to zoom gets to be a little clunky. Infinitely jealous of your 2.8 zoom lens...

Lol very few of my shots are with that lens, none of my photos on here are. I was tired of shots where I did everything right yet didn't get that good of a photo, so I decided to take a chance with "getting what you pay for" and so far I've liked the results. Once I get my D810 I won't need any new equipment for a while.
