More freedom with the settings, more control over your photos, the ability to change lenses, glass zoom instread of digital zoom (yes, it does make a huge difference, a digital zoom pixelates a photo, the DSLR telephoto is like a telescope and will not reduce quality nomatter how far you zoom), and overall speed. I also went straight from a cell phone to a DSLR and had the settings masterred within a day. But it's understandable to get a point and shoot if the DSLR is out of your realm of possibility. There are many people on the site taking amazing photos without one.

yea i think id be better off with a point and shoot right now, but i really need to get out of using my phone, my last 3 pictures have been deleted, most recently this one [http://i.imgur.com/VWYYXHR.jpg]

Your phone has a fairly good camera. Much better than mine. Do you do any editing?
