I would definitely start off with a point and shoot since you have never owned a camera. There is no reason to jump to a DSLR yet. I had point and shoots for 5 years until I upgraded to a DSLR.
that was exactly what i was thinking. and although, as W16 just mentioned, a DSLR is almost mot a possibility anymore, what makes a dslr so good?
More freedom with the settings, more control over your photos, the ability to change lenses, glass zoom instread of digital zoom (yes, it does make a huge difference, a digital zoom pixelates a photo, the DSLR telephoto is like a telescope and will not reduce quality nomatter how far you zoom), and overall speed. I also went straight from a cell phone to a DSLR and had the settings masterred within a day. But it's understandable to get a point and shoot if the DSLR is out of your realm of possibility. There are many people on the site taking amazing photos without one.

Your phone has a fairly good camera. Much better than mine. Do you do any editing?
