Ok I don't know much about America but for NYC the best place is Manhattan.

Greenwich CT, Manhattan (Meatpacking and Soho on weekends, 5th Ave and the surrounding areas on weekdays) and the Short Hills Mall in Short Hills, NJ on weekends, although watch out for security there, they don't like carspotters that much :( It's really easy to get around though.
