I've noticed that some photos on the forum are extremely high quality, why are the normal pics people post not as good quality?

Because ES got cheap, and took away high-quality images. For example, if you edit a photo and save it as JPEG or PNG, it is extremely high quality, except ES converts those high quality images into standard .JPG, and resizes them. Thus, it makes the quality worse. The more they host, the more they have to pay.

No, no, no!
First of all, theres no difference between JPG and JPEG. This site resizes all pictures to 640p width and around 50kb size, which is not enough so the picture loses some info, thus lowering the quality. Its not about the image codec. And the reason why they chose to resize all pictures is not server space, but to ensure that every user even with slow connection can enjoy the site without having to load those +1000kb PNG's. They have all the uploaded original unresized pictures stored on their servers.
