Depends on quite a lot of things. If you plan well ahead of time, costs will be lower but only marginally. If you hope to stay close to Monterey or in it, it will be much more. If you go with a group of people then that cost will go down. Rental cars and flights will vary too, and if you want to pay to go to shows then that adds on even more.
I went last year and a friend found a place through Craigslist and we paid him like $25 a night. I ended up paying like $600 total for the whole trip. Didn't pay for a single event.

But yeah, book EARLY. As car week gets closer, hotels get completely booked, and prices for open rooms skyrocket. I remember last year I was looking at hotel rooms about a week prior, and the best I could find was a Travelodge 20 miles away for $700 a night.
