I was also considering a Nikon D5100 or even a Nikon 1 (with interchangeable lens) There's a lot of cameras out there, I just want to get a good one (at a decent price)
I use a Canon 60D with an 18-135mm. im planning to get a 50mm 1.8 and a 70-200mm f4 by the end of the year. I got the 60D brand new from Best Buy for 1100 bucks.
I will look into that! :) Truthfully I have also been considering the iPad mini. I would buy it for a tool. It only has a 5mp camera, though... I don't know how that would do??
Yes thank you. I do have a SLR though. It is high-end, but I want a middle range camera also! :)
This is what I have:

Depends on your budget, if want a cheap one try to buy some used entry level DSRL, they are really affordable and arent really any worse in practice than the newer shinier models. Perfect to start with and learn photography, no point to spend huge amounts of money to a camera if you cant use it properly.
If you want to have great photos the biggest factor in it is you, the photographer, not the tools.
Hey guys, thought I'd revive this thread for my own selfish purposes lol. I've had as entry-level a DSLR as you can get and I really want better shots now that I feel I know what I'm doing. Any suggestions? I want to stay with Nikon because I have three Nikkor lenses including the 18-200 I got just this year. I was looking at the D5200 which would be better, but I also thought about splurging on the D7100 because it seems to trump everything in its class.
Any thoughts? Won't be making this decision soon, but just want to get started on some research.
I'm no professional on cameras but what difference does the body do to the photo?
Resolution, metering, focus, etc... I'm not an expert either but from what I've read, both cameras I mentioned are leaps and bounds better than the one I currently have.
