I would definitely recommend a MX-5 Miata...they're a blast to drive and are typically very reliable. Or, if you can swing it, a Honda S2000. They're usually more expensive than a Miata, but they are more powerful and you wouldn't suffer from unreliability either.
It doesn't look like Toyota ever offered the turbocharged MR2's in Europe, but I think many were imported (illegally) and those would also be fun to own. A turbocharged, second generation model is the one to go for though.
Personally I would stay away from '90's American cars unless you find one that just feels right. Many of the American cars from that era were using outdated engines, and were slow and inefficient compared to European and Japanese competition.
